![]() This foreshadows some of his later actions. Napoleon has trained nine mean attack dogs for his protection and other purposes. (P.57) This scene shows Napoleon is a tyrant and wants all the power to himself and that he has been sneaky. But just at this moment, Napoleon stood up and…uttered a high pitched whimper of a kind no one had ever heard…nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came…they dashed strait for snowball. Orwell tells about the meeting to discuss the windmill: By the time he had finished speaking, there was no dought as to which way the vote would go. So Napoleon frames Snowball so he can become the leader. Snowball does a lot of research and planning but Napoleon wants to take over completely by himself. Three days later Old Major dies so Snowball and Napoleon take over but Napoleon wants all the power. Jones starts firing his gun into the darkness. Riches more than the mind can picture, Wheat and barley, oats and hay, Clover, beans, and mangel-wurzels Shall be ours upon the day…(p.22-23) After the song the animals were even more excited. Rings shall vanish from our noses, And the harness from our back, Bit and spur shall rust forever, Cruel whips no more shall crack. Soon or late the day is coming, Tyrant Man shall be o’erthrown, And the fruitful fields of England Shall be trodden by beasts alone. Old Major then teaches them the song the Beasts of England which teaches them the “great” life without a man and with no more bad leaders: Beasts of England, beasts of Ireland, Beasts of every land and clime, Hearken to my joyful tidings, Of the golden future time. (p.19) This speech gets all the animals riled up and sends the thoughts of getting rid of man. Although it’s not written as a formal argument, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas (see Examples of Utopia in Literature) is widely considered to be a fairly persuasive case against the political theory known as “utilitarianism.Yet he is lord of all the animals. In making an argument about ideal theory, it may help to give your reader a quick thought experiment in the form of a short utopian story. This is just like utopian literature, except that it’s expressed through arguments and logic rather than through stories. There’s a branch of political theory, called ideal theory, that’s essentially all about theorizing what the perfect society would look like. However, it also has a place in some non-fiction essays, especially those about politics. Since most utopias are described in short stories, novels, or films, utopian literature is a genre of fiction. Can you begin to see why such a society might have appealed to people throughout history? And does it help you refine your arguments in favor of your own ideals? You might end up writing a dystopia this way, but it’s even more interesting if you can make your utopia seem genuinely believable without fully supporting its underlying principles! All political ideals have their drawbacks, and a utopian story needs to account for these in some way (otherwise it will start to seem like pure fantasy rather than a thoughtful exploration of an idea).ĭon’t overlook the possibility of exploring an ideal you don’t agree with! Some of the best utopian literature is written in a “devil’s advocate” tone – for example, if you believe in individual freedom and limited government, try writing a utopian story about a society with a powerful centralized authority. Whatever ideal you choose, make sure that you’re not just ignoring its flaws. Or maybe you believe that advanced artificial intelligence will be able to solve all of humanity’s problems. Or maybe you want to try your hand at designing a society without poverty. Maybe you’re interested in environmentalism and want to work out how an environmentally conscious society might work. The first step in writing a utopian story is to decide what sort of ideal you want to explore. ![]()
